Weightlifting is the base for OSG its where some of our best athletes started there career. It is a very complex sport to master although the moves can be taught in just a few sessions. The sport is based on two movements the snatch which is to take the weight from the floor to over head in one movement.

Then there is the clean and jerk which is in two movements usually a squat clean then a jerk to finally get it over head. This may sound easy but the power and speed the lifter must move takes a life time to acquire. Shaun Clegg (left) and Alex Collier (right) both train at Olympic Sports Gym.

What ever your chosen sport,  Powerlifting, strongman or weightlifting if you want to be the very best give us a test run.  With an extensive range of equipment to suit power lifters,  weightlifters and strongmen, the gym is the perfect place to  go if you're looking to get stronger. With dedicated accredited strength athletes who can show you the ropes with Strongman, Olympic Lifting and Powerlifting, our trainers can show you the way to to power sports. With equipment ranging from atlas stones down to calibrated Elieko plates and bars for the serious weightlifters we aim to cater for you needs whatever your level.

If you are looking to get into some strongman training for a bit of fun, to train or even to compete feel free to get in touch. We have many professionals training at OSG including Tom Martin (left) who holds the world deadlift record.

At Olympic Sports Gym we also have many ex-athletes who now compete in strongman but in their time they have been serious contenders to bring home some medals. Although they have moved on in sports they have valuable knowledge built up in careers that started out in there teens and are willing to pass this on to the new generation of lifters.

Power lifting is widely available in any gym. The sport consists of 3 lifts, the bench press, dead lift and squat. there are strict rules that each federation set out for the lifts such as bench presses must be paused on the chest, dead lifts must be un hitched and squats much hit parallel.  We have people competing in different weight classes from under 90kg, under 105kg and open class so if you want to compete there will be people there to help and advise including current professionals and record holders.

Here at OSG we have a budding group of power lifters who are setting records in there own categories, who all have advice which cant be found in just any gym that makes OSG what it is.... “a proper strength gym!

Power lifting has many facets to it and you can deep as you like, you can lift raw which is using no equipment or you can lift equipped which means you can uses suits and shirts which enable the lifter to shift much more weight. This seems simple enough but its take lots of time and technique to get the most out of your equipment.  This sport is available to everyone and is a good all round sport for fitness not just strength. Here we have people who have mastered equipment and picked up many tips of the trade in their long powerlifting careers and is ready to pass on to new lifters to provide them with the best chance they can in powerlifting.

Olympic Lifting:

Olympic lifting requires the athlete to lift the bar as high as possible so to allow him to jump under the bar and hold it in either a front squat position for the clean or full overhead squat on the snatch. There is a millisecond phase where the feet leave the floor to either jump horizontally forward ( split jerk ) or sideways for cleans and snatches. These horizontal jumps, forward or sideways, are the key to horizontal movements in sprints to the side or forward. Maximum forces used to leave the ground then push horizontally is the perfect primary explosive speed work for an athlete. That is why the Olympic lifts are key in exercise development for rapid movements horizontally.

Sports Performance Innovation Technology Lab

Alongside the new studio we have some very high tech equipment that is available through our personal trainers that is aimed at combining both mental stimulation as well as physical. These training ideas focus on speed and power development for both the body and mind creating a new level of complete body workout.

Mick, utilising his extensive knowledge, background and experience has formulated his own unique training regime using the S.P.I. equipment based within his Ashton gym complex.  Using these cutting edge technologies that are designed to improve hand-eye coordination, reaction, speed and agility Mick is developing a new way of training elite athletes.

Mick's son Steven (below) a partner in the gym heads the Sports Performance Innovation company along side Mick and ex-Sunderland FC physiotherapist Peter Friar. Dedicated to finding and utilising advanced and innovative products from all round the world they use the equipment they promote in everyday advanced training. Promoting the use of such cutting edge technologies including the 3D brain training I-span, a speed re-active training device, Olympic Sports Gym aims to be at the forefront of advanced training methods.

D2, I-Span and NeuroTracker are not items that can be found in many establishments round the country, in fact the exceptional technologies in this gym are extremely rare on the general circuit.

With the most up to date technology, Olympic Sports Gym has all the key elements that a 21st century gym should have but with that good old fashioned charm. The S.P.I. lab is open to anyone via the personal training program within the gym. For further information of what is available check out the S.P.I. website of contact Mick at OSG. Right now  these amazing pieces of cutting edge innovation are all available in one place which constantly seeks new cutting edge scientific knowledge to be applied to the industry of sport to produce some amazing athletic performances, showing improvement in all aspects of athletic training be that mental or physical.

Mick is pushing the leading edge of new training methodologies within his gym, seeking to find ways to give those he trains a leading edge to become the very best in their chosen field, whether it be football, taekwondo, rugby, weightlifting or any other sporting area.

Humble gym that has all the power

The Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton under Lyne does not immediately strike you as the venue of champions.

There is no sign to direct visitors to the fourth floor of an old mill building at the centre of a square of residential tower blocks. There is a lift but you have to operate it yourself.

In a land of sanitised supergyms, there are no zumba classes or beauty rooms. Here you train to win.

The philosophy has paid dividends in Powerlifting. Three of the lifters who practise here have recently become world champions. Riain Morrison and Gary Boulton at the GPC World Powerlifting Championships in Limerick, and Kev Stuart at the WPC equivalent in Riga, Latvia. A fourth, Chris Glover, was disappointed to come second after injuring his arm.

Mick Clegg Trains World Taekwondo Champion Aaron Cook

In the starting 9 months of working with Mick, Champion Aaron Cook has gone on to win 8 Gold medals in open championships around the world including the Dutch, UK, USA & Belgium as it 2nd April 2012 and is well on course for the 2012 Olympics.

For the past few months OSG has had the  unique opportunity to train the Taekwondo Gold medalist Aaron Cook, 2012 Olympic hopeful. Aaron, already holding several gold medals, left team GBs coaching programme in June to undertake his own training regime. Aaron Cook, who took up Taekwando at the age of five after watching Power Rangers, now trains on his own at a gym in Ashton-under-Lyne, where he works on his strength and conditioning with Manchester United fitness coach Mike Clegg. Aaron is a strong contender for the 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo event and signs are looking good for another gold for the 20 year old Power Rangers fan. In October 2011 at the British International Taekwondo Championships Aaron won another gold medal beating the competition to first place. As well as using the main gym at Olympic Sports Gym Complex Mick is giving Aaron full advantage of the specialist equipment in the S.P.I. laboratory. Aaron, who has won several gold medals since he began training with Mick, hopes to represent GB in the 2012 Olympic games and bring the gold back to Manchester.

AARON COOK says he's back on course for Olympic taekwondo gold  —  thanks to the help of Manchester United's pioneering fitness coach. Cook, 20, quit the British Taekwondo high performance squad in June after a disappointing defense of his World Championship crown in South Korea, where he crashed out in the first round.

The United fan also takes weekly trips to Mick Clegg's Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton-Under-Lyne, where he trains using state-of-the-art machines designed to improve his hand-eye coordination, agility, speed and strength.

Aaron Cook is currently being sponsored by Sky Sports News. As a result he makes regular appearances on their news programmes.

Sky Sports News Special Report on Taekwondo Aaron Cooks preparation for the 2012 Olympics. Cook, who took up Taekwando at the age of five after watching Power Rangers, now trains on his own at a gym in Ashton-under-Lyne, where he works on his strength and conditioning with Manchester United fitness coach Mike Clegg.

"There is a metal determination inside him," said Clegg. "There is something steely in there that you only find in certain players. I found it in Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs - people like that. They had something really, really special and Aaron's definitely got some of that"

The heat is on

Cook steps up efforts to capture British Olympic place

Cook, a Manchester United fan, has recently teamed up with United's fitness coach Mike Clegg - a move he says is paying huge dividends. "It's been fantastic. Ever since I left the national academy set up, Mike's been training me for no fee. "He's put me in some great shapes. I've won four tournaments since I've left the national team so it's obviously working and I feel in a lot better shape than I have ever been in my life." Cook splits his training time between Ashton-under-Lyne and a gym that is rather closer to his home in Gorton.

Aaron says "I've just spent five weeks in Mexico training with some of the best fighters in the world - and I've got the bangs and bruises to prove it!" "My strength and conditioning coach Mike Clegg devised a daily training plan but we couldn't afford to fly him out as well but we did at least stay in contact every day." "Mike used to work for Manchester United, the club I support, and he definitely knows his stuff.  He's improved my fitness no end and that paid off in Mexico where I fought with some of the top people in my weight division."

Warrington Wolves have developed a strong association and working relationship with professional strength and conditioning coach Mick Clegg.

The gym is renowned for assisting a wide range of people from working with professional stars including players from Manchester United to encouraging fitness throughout those in the community.

The players were given use of the weights, the strong man equipment and the high tech neurotracker machine which trains reaction time and peripheral vision

Chris Baron, Wolves' head of strength and conditioning, said: "The main reason behind the visit was to give the players the opportunity to experience something different as well as a bit of mental stimulation for them. "

"They've been training at Padgate all year and it was good to experience a different gym as well as different training and coaching too as Mick delivered the session. We had different equipment at our disposal adding variety to the session."
